Do you know of any talented young women who enjoy math?

We are interested in inviting some bright young minds to the West campus of Arizona State University on Saturday, February 27th, 2010, for our second annual Sonia Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day, honoring Sonia Kovalevsky, a pioneer for women in mathematics.

Sonia Kovalevsky was regarded as one of the world's best mathematicians in her time. Her amazing life included several firsts for women. Her stunning achievements include: becoming the first female member of the Russian Academy of the Sciences and the first modern European woman to attain full professorship; establishing the first significant result in the general theory of partial differential equations; winnin gthe Prix Bordin prize; becoming an editor of a prominent mathematics journal in addition to being a gifted writer. Although society at that time did not allow women to succeed in academia, Sonia Kovalevsky had positive mentors in her life that supported her in pursuit of a career in mathematics.

Many young women do not excel in the sciences due to lack of role models or just because they don't know that careers in science are open to them!

This Sonia Kovalevsky Day is an opportunity to engage your female students in a day of networking, mentoring, and fun! The day will begin at 8:30am with registration and will be followed by a lecture on Mathematics and Art given by Dr. Goran Konjevod, an Assistant Professor at ASU in the School of Engineering. Another lecture on, "Overcoming Adversity on Pursuit of Professional Goals" will be given by Dr. Carla van de Sande, an assistant professor at ASU in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. These lectures will be followed by a mathematics competition, a career panel, a session on applying to college, and finally, a closing awards ceremony. Medals and prizes will be given to the top 3 scoring teams, as well as the most creative team.

Our faculty and staff are committed to the success of our students as they pursue one of our degrees. We offer degrees in Applied Computing, Applied Mathematics, Life Sciences, and Statistics. We have numerous options within these degrees so that students can tailor their degree to their interests and goals. These include concentrations in environmental science, forensics, pre-med, networks, digital media, databases, and secondary education. We also offer Minors in Chemistry, Life Sciences, and Mathematics.

Our strength as a division can be seen not only in the research our faculty and students are pursuing but in the types of jobs our alumni are accepting upon graduation. Our graduates may be working as surgeons, physical therapists, computer scientists and graphic designers to name a few. Our students acquire a solid scientific and mathematical knowledge base, proficiency in scientific inquiry, and the ability to apply these skills to life situations.
